MD & Engineering Master’s
Focus on entrepreneurship and innovation

The Doctor of Medicine & Engineering Master’s is a five-year, dual-degree program that enriches the experience of MD candidates in the Duke University School of Medicine.
Program participants become physician-engineers with strong skills in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Duke MD & Engineering students can receive the Barr-Spach Medicine & Engineering Scholarship to support tuition and fees.
Details
Courses
- 3 MD courses can be credited toward the Master of Engineering
Thesis
- Identify, prioritize and select a health care need with high potential impact and value
- Create a conceptual design of an innovative solution
Internship
Further develop your design, including:
- Prototyping
- Protection of intellectual property
- Creation of a development plan, including details on licensing, marketing, regulations, manufacturability, financing and risks
Clinical Clerkship
- Rescheduled to Year 5
Scholarship
The Barr-Spach Medicine & Engineering Scholarship is competitive and awarded annually.
It was created through the generosity of Maynard Ramsey III, Classes of 1969 and 1975, in honor of mentors Roger C. Barr, BS’64, PhD’68, and Madison S. Spach, T’50, MD’54, HS’54-59.
