DEIC in Outreach

We believe Duke BME’s commitment to equity and anti-racism should go beyond the walls of our university. We aim to expose young students in the Durham area to STEM concepts and projects, and to establish productive and beneficial relationships between local Durham schools and Duke.

Duke Research in Engineering Program

DukeREP is a seven-week summer program for high school students with an interest in science and engineering. The mission is to increase diversity in STEM fields. The program, hosted on Duke’s campus by Duke BME, introduces students from diverse backgrounds to scientific research in hopes of inspiring them to pursue STEM careers.

Outreach Design Education

A set of immersive programs that expose students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to engineering design and STEM. ODE, supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, hosts a Design Hackathon for middle school students, a Summer Design Camp for highschoolers and professional development experiences for teachers. All programs are free, with meals provided.
