Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Community in Duke BME

Duke University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering is committed to being a diverse community of people with ideas and approaches that make a difference locally, nationally and globally.

Mission

The Biomedical Engineering Department’s DEI Mission is to include and engage the rich diversity of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community partners in the department’s research, service and educational programs.

Building an environment where all individuals are included, supported, and feel valued will ensure that the Duke BME community is composed of a broad spectrum of identities through recruitment, retention, and ongoing professional development. By purposefully integrating diversity, inclusion and justice into our research, outreach programs and teaching curriculum, we can ensure that we create a more equitable department and community.

These efforts are supported by the Pratt School of Engineering DEIC Committee. Duke Engineering is proud to be part of the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Deans Diversity Initiative. We have earned the Bronze Award from the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program, and its recommendation as a national exemplar.

The guiding mission of the BME Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community (DEIC) Committee is to create a sense of belonging and empowerment for those who are under-represented in and/or historically excluded from our community, be it on the basis of gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, socio-economic status, citizenship, or affiliation in the department.

The Duke BME DEIC Committee organizes and supports initiatives to improve recruitment efforts, mentorship opportunities, activities to promote inclusion across the department and community outreach programs.
